Spending the Day Outdoors

For the second year in a row, Trailmen from OR-1531 participated in the Youth Outdoor Day at the E.E. Wilson Wildlife Refuge.  It is an amazing event with a wide array of hands-on activities that develop the participant’s appreciate for habitat, hunting, fishing, wilderness survival, and the great outdoors.  Many organizations, including the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon Hunters Association, Ducks Unlimited, Santiam Flycasters,  Yamhill County Search and Rescue, and the Oregon State Police – Wildlife Division.

Activities at the Youth Outdoor Day included sporting clay clinic, an archery clinic, predator and waterfowl calling, construction of birdhouses and wood duck boxes, duck decoy painting, marksmanship, and fly casting and fly tying.  The Trailmen were also able to look at some amazing wildlife and reptile displays, furs and pelts, and Willamette Pleistocene fossils (including mammoth tusks).  The boys earned steps in outdoor skills, Science and technology, and Hobbies Branch.
